Among interesting people born on this day, I have to mention:

German engineer and engine designer, who invented the spray carburettor and was the chief designer of the first Mercedes automobiles (1900-01).

 

At age 26, he began designing cars with Gottlieb Daimler and Nikolaus Otto, with whom he developed the four-stroke engine cycle.

In April 1882, Maybach joined Gottlieb Daimler in a partnership to produce a light-weight, high-speed petrol engine suitable for vehicles.

Maybach invented the float-feed carburettor (1893) in which fuel was vaporized by passing it through a jet as a fine spray and mixed with air to produce a combustible mixture for the engine.

Maybach designed the first Mercedes car for Daimler in 1901, but retired in 1907 to design and manufacture engines for Zeppelin airships. His son, Karl Maybach, followed him in producing luxury automobiles.

Abraham Lincoln loved cats

ABRAHAM LINCOLN and his LOVE for CATS!

United States President, Abraham Lincoln, loved all animals, especially cats. He loved cats so much that his wife once said that cats were her husband’s hobby.

The then, Secretary of State William Seward, gave two kittens on Lincoln as a White House gift. The President loved to spend hours just petting the cats and talking to them.

He fed his kitties at the table. One time he used a gold fork to do that, which was too much for Mrs. Lincoln. His response?

“If a gold fork was good enough for former President Buchanan, it’s good enough for Tabby.”

AMAZING FUN CAT FACTS:

    1. Cats have over 20 muscles that control their ears.

    2. A group of cats is  called clowder.

    3. Cats have more data storage than an iPad.

    4. Abraham Lincoln had four cats in the White House.

    5. Adult cats only meow to communicate with humans.

    6. Some cats are ambidextrous. Although 40 to 50% of female cats are typically right-pawed, while male cats are typically left-pawed: Psychologists Deborah Wells and Sarah Millsopp of Queen’s University Belfast tested 42 house cats — 21 males and 21 females — to determine whether they favored their right or left paws when performing tasks of varying difficulty. Their report on the results has been accepted for publication in the journal Animal Behavior of Science Direct (play with your kitties and let me know if this is true. I did it and couldn’t prove it, 🤩 but then again, I’m not a Psychologist).

    7. SO SORRY dog lovers: A cat’s cerebral cortex (the part of the brain in charge of cognitive information processing) has 300 million neurons, compared with a dog’s 160 million. (BTW,  (I love dogs too 🐶).

    8. Cats are very picky creatures about their «bathroom.» If you have more than one feline, you should have one litter box for each one of them.

    9. They are the only mammals that cannot taste sweetness (no cake for my kitty-cats on my birthday).

    10. A cat can jump six times his length in a single bound.

    11. Cats love routine. Any change in their routine makes them mad, upset. Some cats get sick, they can vomit or refuse to eat.

    12. When Cats Leave Their Poop Uncovered It’s a Sign of Aggression.

    13. Kneading is a sign of contentment and happiness. Cats knead their mothers when they are nursing to stimulate the let-down of milk.

    14. There are currently 45 Hemingway cats living at the writer’s former home in Key West, Fla.

    15. A cat’s nose is ridged with a unique pattern, just like a human fingerprint.

    16. The first cat in space was a French cat named Felicette (a.k.a. “Astrocat”) In 1963, France blasted the cat into outer space. Electrodes implanted in her brains sent neurological signals back to Earth. She survived the trip.

    17. A cat can travel at a top speed of approximately 31 mph (49 km) over a short distance.

    18. In several countries of Europe and North America black cats are a sign of bad luck, but in Britain and Australia black cats are considered lucky!

    19. Usually, a cat has about 12 whiskers on each side of its face. Have you counted them already? 😇

#1 Christmas Dinner Ideas: Standing Rib Roast

Christmas Dinner Ideas

Ingredients

  • 6 teaspoons of lemon-pepper seasoning
  • 6 teaspoons of paprika
  • 3 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 bone-in beef rib roast (67 to 8 pounds)
  • 4 cups beef stock

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 325°. In a small bowl, mix the first five ingredients. Place roast in a roasting pan, fat side up; rub with seasoning mixture.
  • Roast 2-1/4 to 2-3/4 hours or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 145°; medium, 160°; well-done, 170°). Remove roast from oven; tent with foil. Let stand 15 minutes before carving.
  • Meanwhile, pour drippings and loosened browned bits from roasting pan into a small saucepan. Skim fat. Add beef stock to drippings; bring to a boil. Serve with roast.

#2 Christmas Tortellini and Spinach Soup

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) vegetable broth
  • 1 package (9 ounces) refrigerated cheese tortellini or tortellini of your choice
  • 1 can (15 ounces) cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) Italian diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 3 tablespoons minced fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup shredded Asiago cheese

Directions

  • In a large saucepan, bring broth to a boil. Add tortellini; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in the beans, tomatoes, salt and pepper; return to a simmer. Cook 4-5 minutes longer or until tortellini are tender.
  • Stir in spinach and basil; cook until spinach is wilted. Top servings with cheese.

HAPPY SATURNALIA

December 17-23 Predating the birth of Jesus by centuries, this Ancient Roman celebration, in honor of the God Saturn, is marked by parties, gift-giving, and role reversals.

The first-century AD poet Gaius Valerius Catullus described Saturnalia as ‘the best of times’: dress codes were relaxed, small gifts such as dolls, candles and caged birds were exchanged.

Saturnalia saw the inversion of social roles. The wealthy were expected to pay the month’s rent for those who couldn’t afford it, masters and slaves to swap clothes. Family households threw dice to determine who would become the temporary Saturnalian monarch. The poet Lucian of Samosata (AD 120-180) has the god Cronos (Saturn) say in his poem, Saturnalia:

‘During my week the serious is barred: no business allowed. Drinking and being drunk, noise and games of dice, appointing of kings and feasting of slaves, singing naked, clapping … an occasional ducking of corked faces in icy water – such are the functions over which I preside.’

Saturnalia originated as a farmer’s festival to mark the end of the autumn planting season in honour of Saturn (satus means sowing). Numerous archaeological sites from the Roman coastal province of Constantine, now in Algeria, demonstrate that the cult of Saturn survived there until the early third century AD.

Saturnalia grew in duration and moved to progressively later dates under the Roman period. During the reign of the Emperor Augustus (63 BC-AD 14), it was a two-day affair starting on December 17th. By the time Lucian described the festivities, it was a seven-day event. Changes to the Roman calendar moved the climax of Saturnalia to December 25th, around the time of the date of the winter solstice.

From around 1583 the Church of Scotland ( Presbyterian) discouraged ‘Yule’ celebrations. The church believed that there was no basis for celebrating the day as it didn’t reflect what was in the bible. There are even records of some people being arrested over unlawful celebrations during
the years it was officially banned.

‘Christmas Day’ only became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958.

When something is just ‘made-up’ the permutations can be endless.

HARBIN ICE SNOW IN CHINA

Harbin Ice and Snow fiesta is China’s original and greatest ice artwork festival, attracting hundreds of thousands of local people and visitors from all over the world.

The first Ice lanterns were a winter-time tradition in northeast China. During the Qing Dynasty（1644 – 1911), the locals and fishermen often made and used ice lanterns as jack-lights during the winter months.

At that time these were made simply by pouring water into a bucket that was then put out in the open to freeze. It was then gently warmed before the water froze completely so that the bucket-shaped ice could be pulled out.

RIO DE JANEIRO

The awesome celebrations  of this county mark the start of the Lent period, dancers and revellers celebrate the occasion with colourful street parties.

Considered one of the biggest carnivals in the world, Brazil erupted in magnificent colours and samba parade.

Dancers performed on top of monumental floats, and orchestras and musicians played samba music for all to enjoy.

ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON

The Fiesta continues for nine days, and you can enjoy various musical performances, see night glows in which the balloons propane burners are ignited, but the hot air balloons are tethered to the ground.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium—Waverly Hills, Kentucky

This sanatorium was designed to house tuberculosis patients and have the most cutting-edge treatment options the world had ever seen.

These days, it’s become known as one of scariest haunted hospitals in America—as well as one of the most haunted places in the country. Ghost hunters regularly report seeing shadow people, hearing disembodied voices, seeing objects move by themselves, and also seeing the ghost of a little girl who runs on the second floor.

Beechworth Lunatic Asylum—Beechworth, Australia

Many people who go to Beechworth claim to feel a sense of dread in the shock therapy hall—or even feel poked by those ghostly residents of the haunted asylum.

However, there’s also a very sad side to this haunted asylum. Adults were not the only residents here, which is why many people claim to hear the sounds of children playing around the area. In fact, it’s not so uncommon for child visitors to be seen talking to invisible people—then claiming they were talking to boys who «lived there.»

This speciality is served in all the big festival tents. There is actually not much room for experimenting, because the guests want the roast pork exactly like it’s done in Bavaria: with potato dumplings, sauerkraut and, of course, a lot of gravy.

The only exception that one can recommend with a clear conscience is exchanging the potato dumplings for bread dumplings. Many locals go on an excursion to the festival field on the Wiesn Sundays to eat roast pork with their families.
