Yummy Avocado Roasted Chickpea Taco Salad Recipe for a Healthy Summer

Summer is here with sunny weather, flowers, veggies, warm water in the pool. Time to collect our vegetables and enjoy them. I hope you like this recipe too!

INGREDIENTS:

For the Roasted Chickpeas:

  • 1 (15 oz) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette:

  • 1 shallot, minced
  • 2 cups packed fresh cilantro leaves, stems removed
  • 1 large clove garlic
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

For the Salad:

  • 4 corn tortillas
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • 6 cups chopped Romaine lettuce
  • 1 cup chopped red cabbage
  • 1 cup grape tomatoes, cut in half
  • 1 cup fresh corn kernels
  • 1 large avocado, pit removed and sliced
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the drained chickpeas in a clean dishtowel. Remove chickpea skins and let the chickpeas dry for a few minutes.
  2. Place the chickpeas in medium bowl. In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, lime juice, and olive oil. Stir until chickpeas are well coated.
  3. Spread the chickpeas out in an even layer on a large baking sheet. Roast the chickpeas in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. The chickpeas are done when they are dry and crispy on the outside. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  4. While the chickpeas are roasting, make the cilantro lime vinaigrette. In a blender or food processor, combine the shallot, cilantro, garlic, vinegar, lime juice, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Blend until smooth. Set aside.
  5. Turn the oven to 375 degrees F. Brush each side of the corn tortillas with olive oil. Cut the tortillas into 1/4-1/2″ strips. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place tortilla strips on the baking sheet in an even layer. Bake until golden and crisp, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with salt, to taste. Set aside.
  6. To assemble the salad, place lettuce in a large salad bowl. Top the lettuce with red cabbage, tomatoes, corn, avocado slices, cilantro, spiced chickpeas, and baked tortilla strips. Drizzle the salad with cilantro lime vinaigrette and serve immediately.

What causes alcohol addiction? You will find it in this new article

The faulty mechanism is a failure to clear away a substance known as gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) that inhibits signaling around neurons, or brain cells, in the central amygdala.
he amygdala is a region of the brain concerned with emotion, learning, memory, and motivation.

The scientists report their findings in a paper now published in the journal Science.

«We have to understand,» explains senior study author Markus Heilig, who is a professor in clinical and experimental medicine at Linköping University in Sweden, «that a core feature of addiction is that you know it is going to harm you, potentially even kill you, and nevertheless something has gone wrong with the motivational control and you keep doing it.»

When the researchers looked inside the rats’ brains, they discovered what might be disrupting the «motivational control.» First, they looked for differences in gene expression in different parts of the brain. The biggest differences were in the amygdala.

They revealed that the gene that codes for a protein called GAT-3 was expressed at much lower levels in the amygdala of the rats that continued to choose alcohol compared with the rats that switched to sugared water.

GAT-3 is a «transporter» protein that helps to clear away GABA from around neurons. Studies have also revealed that rats that become addicted to alcohol seem to have altered GABA signaling.

Scientists Just Discovered a Brand New Part of Sperm That Could Explain Infertility in Men

I know that the title is kind of redundant when mentioning sperm and men in the same line. I wrote it like that to make sure Google crawls it the right way. You know, we humans still way smarter than the Google robots -now, you are supposed to smile, or laugh :)

Hiding in plain sight.
JACINTA BOWLER
Sperm has been having a tough time lately. The concentration per ejaculate is getting lower, scientists have created an artificial version that could one day replace it, and to make matters worse, common household products might affect the quality of the little guys.

«Abnormalities in the formation and function of the atypical centriole may be the root of infertility of unknown cause in couples who have no treatment options available to them,» Tomer Avidor-Reiss, from Toledo’s Department of Biological Sciences, said in a press release.

«It also may have a role in early pregnancy loss and embryo development defects.»

You need two centrioles to make the working centrosome, and until now it was thought that the sperm provided one centriole to the egg, and then duplicated itself.

Considering Herbal Medicine to Prevent Head Aches and More

An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties. Herbal medicines are one type of dietary supplement. They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants. People use herbal medicines to try to maintain or improve their health.

Did you know that about 25 percent of the drugs prescribed worldwide are derived from plants? Of the 252 drugs in the World Health Organization’s essential medicine list, 11 percent are exclusively of plant origin.

In fact, about 200 years ago the first pharmacological compound, morphine, was produced from opium extracted from the seed pods of the poppy flower. Since then, scientists have been studying plants to create the pharmaceutical products we know today. But after years of over-medicating, facing resistant bacteria in the microbiome and treating the illness rather than the root of the problem, people are beginning to pay more attention to natural, herbal medicine

If you are thinking about using an herbal medicine, first get information on it from reliable sources. Make sure to tell your health care provider about any herbal medicines you are taking.

Longevity: Want to Live Forever?

I am very active in my LINKEDIN account. I just published my latest medical article there and want to share it here:

Cyclist Frenchman Robert Marchand set a new world record when he cycled 22.547 kilometers (about 14 miles) in an hour — at the age of 105. «I am not here to be champion. I am here to prove that at 105 years old you can still ride a bike,» Marchand said.

Longevity is associated to genetic factors, but a healthy attitude and lifestyle contribute greatly to your lifespan.

«The most difficult problem is to get enough old people, especially those aged 100 or more, to take part in such a study. Interestingly, the genetic effects are much more evident in 100-year-olds than in 95-year-olds», notes the first author of the report, Dr. Friederike Flachsbart of the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology at Kiel University.
A research group in the Faculty of Medicine at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (CAU) has now confirmed this assumption by comparing DNA samples taken from 388 German centenarians with those from 731 younger people.

Previously, in September 2008, an American research team led by Bradley J. Willcox had published in PNAS a study that indicated a higher frequency of this genetic variation in long-lived Americans of Japanese origin (ages 95 and above). Professor Almut Nebel, the scientific leader of the «Research Group for Healthy Ageing» at Kiel, comments:

«That published result is only of scientific value if it can be confirmed in a study with an independently chosen sample population. Without that there must still remain a tinge of doubt. We have now eliminated that uncertainty about the connection between FOXO3A and longevity, both by our results from the German sample study and by the support from our French partners in Paris, whose research on French centenarians showed the same trend. This discovery is of particular importance as there are genetic differences between Japanese and European people. We can now conclude that this gene is probably important as a factor in longevity throughout the world.»
