Saturday Night For The Freethinker Lorraine Hansberry

Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago in 1930, the daughter of civil rights activists and intellectuals. Her play, «A Raisin in the Sun» (1959), the first drama by a black woman to be produced on Broadway and winner of the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, was loosely based on her own experiences. When she was 8, her parents bought a house in a white neighborhood, where Lorraine witnessed a racist mob and her parents’ resulting civil rights case.

She studied at the University of Wisconsin for two years, then moved to New York to become a writer, working as an associate editor of Paul Robeson’s «Freedom.» She married Robert Nemiroff in 1953, whom she met on the picket line while protesting discrimination at New York University. Hansberry divorced her husband in 1964.

Hansberry selected the title of her play from a line in a poem by Langston Hughes: «What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun, Or does it explode?» Sidney Poitier starred in both the play and film versions. The play’s central protagonist is Beneatha, an eager young woman determined to fight social convention and go to medical school. Beneatha is a «self-avowed» atheist (who gets slapped by her mother for admitting it).

Hansberry wrote «The Drinking Gourd,» commissioned by the National Broadcasting Co., in 1959. About the American slave trade, it was considered too hot for television and was never produced. Her play, «The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window» (1964), was about a Jewish intellectual. It played on Broadway while Hansberry was hospitalized for cancer that cut her life short at age 34. «To Be Young, Gifted, and Black» was posthumously adapted from her writings and was produced off-Broadway in 1969, also appearing in book form (1970). D.1965.

Celebration I Quit Smoking 22 Years Ago

Today I am celebrating that 22 years ago I smoked my last cigarette. It wasn’t easy, it was darn difficult, physically and mentally. But I did it, and I am so proud I did. My health has improved immensely, I exercise and don´t get out of breath. I enjoy the horizon without the need to have a cigarette between my fingers. I don’t celebrate every year. I did it this one because I needed to remember myself that I can do and accomplish what I want to. That I have will power and strong!

Budget-Friendly Tasty Crispy Mustard Chicken Recipe with Spring Potato Salad

Chicken Recipe

chicken recipe dr martha castro noriega tijuana

Skinless, boneless chicken thighs are meatier, quicker to cook, and surprisingly healthier than you might think. They’re also budget-friendly and less expensive than breasts. It definitely saves you money and adds a delicious flavor to your meal.

Chicken thighs are the most delicious alternative. Marinate them so they can soak up flavor, grill for a smoky crispness, or coat in crumbs and pan fry for a lighter «fried» chicken.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 lb. yellow new potatoes (about 25)

Kosher salt and pepper

medium chicken thighs

2 tsp. Dijon mustard

2 tbsp. olive oil

2 tbsp. white wine vinegar

1 tbsp. prepared horseradish

scallions, finely chopped

1 tbsp. tarragon, chopped

small radishes, thinly sliced

1/4 c. flat-leaf parsley, chopped

DIRECTIONS
  1. Place potatoes in a large pot. Add enough cold water to cover, then bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp salt, reduce heat, and simmer until tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Drain and run under cold water to cool.
  2. While potatoes are cooking, season chicken with ¼ tsp each salt and pepper and place in a large, heavy skillet, skin side down. Brush with mustard and place a piece of foil on top. Place a second skillet on top of the chicken and put heavy cans in a skillet (the contents won’t cook) to weigh it down (this will flatten the chicken so it cooks up evenly and extra-crisp). Cook on medium until skin is deep brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Flip chicken and cook, uncovered until cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, and horseradish; stir in scallions and tarragon. Halve potatoes (or quarter if large); toss with vinaigrette, then radishes.
  4. Fold parsley into potato salad and serve with chicken.

Saturday Night For The Freethinker 4 Signs You Are Born A Freethinker Part 2

1. You are brilliant and NEVER STOP asking WHY

free thinking dr martha castro noriega mexico

2. You are the pope of your own life:  As a free-thinker, you live by your own set of rules, and NO ONE,  not even your beloved mother, can tell you to live otherwise. You came by your beliefs through your own experience and curiosity. You tested them and they stood up to your tests. It’s impossible for you to kowtow to religious or secular bylaws created to control people.

3. You understand that there are many ways to see the world

4. You have fun! Free-thinkers don’t take things too seriously when they don’t have to. It’s fun to wrap your head around new ideas. It’s fun to try new things. It’s fun to eat new foods. Life is full of adventures and free thinkers are up for the adventure.
