Spring Brings Butterflies And Flowers

Today is the second day of Spring 2022, but many places in the world still show majestic blankets of snow.  And that is because the traditional start of spring is governed primarily by hours of daylight, not the weather. And the traditional start of spring is, essentially, Groundhog Day, even back in history before that furry prognosticator’s tradition was coined.

Although it is hard to feel like spring has begun in some sub-zero temperatures places, the length of day drives a change in weather, and together both drive plants to come out of dormancy.

In southern California From January 1 to January 31 the sun rose a little earlier each day, rising about 8 minutes earlier at the end of the month than at the beginning. From February 1 to February 28, the sun rose about 37 minutes earlier. In March, from the start of the month to the end, the sun will rise an extra 40 minutes earlier.

March 20, the Mid-Spring Equinox, marks the point at which the lengthening days have finally caught up with the waning darkness, and daylight and nighttime are of equal length.

The daffodil (narcissus bublocodum) is the traditional flower of hope and spring as it drives up through the snow in response to the lengthening days of February and March.

My Secrets to Attract Bees to My Garden

Seeing my orchard and my garden flowering and covered with bees makes me happy year after year. I plant a variety of fruits, veggies, annual, biennial and perennial plants to attract bees and actually all kinds of beautiful birds and butterflies. But this blog post is about bees only, so lets focus on them, yes?

Colorful plants like those of my Mammoth sunflowers do the trick:

I notice that bees love the flowers of my lime and lemon trees, they suck the nectar out of them and pollinate them:

The bees also love the flowers of my palm trees and the bottle brush tree. This spring my palm trees were flowering and attracted hundreds of bees:

If I want a ton of bees then I let some carrots to go full blossom and this is what I got this week:

All Bees get all of their carbohydrates from floral nectar and their protein from floral pollen.

Bees rely on flowers to supply them with the food they need to survive. Some flowers (e.g. tomatoes) provide only pollen, the main source of protein for bees. Other flowers (e.g. clovers) provide both nectar and pollen, thus providing both protein and carbohydrates.

Frangipanis (also known as Plumerias) are relatively small trees growing only to about 5-6m in height, but what they lack in height they make up in width often becoming as wide as they are tall.

They have a well-behaved root system which makes them great for the home garden and for growing in pots. Frangipanis are also great survivors coping with drought, heat, neglect and insect and pest attack. They are also deciduous allowing maximum winter sun while providing shade in summer.

It is generally thought that frangipanis (plumerias) are native to South & Central America although some reports claim they are native to the Caribbean and were taken to the Americas by Spanish priests.

This exotic flower is an heirloom rare White Black Red Tri-color Rose with white eye. It has won awards in different parts of the world: USA, Australia, Italy and others. It is considered a multicolored black pearl rose RARÍSSIMA giardino aiuola. Common name known as:

Someone admiring this rose said: «If a guy gave me one of these flowers, I would stay with him all my life» This rose inspires not only pure admiration, but love.

Springs brings flowers, wonderful garden smells, the orchard full of apples, peaches and limes. Spring is happiness, dancing with the stars at night, jumping in the swimming pool at midnight. Yes, spring has my soul flying all over the beauty of the flowers, with the bees and the yellow butterflies. Spring after all. prepares me for a fantastic and energeric summer!
