Skipping breakfast is associated with an increased risk for obesity, metabolic syndrome, elevated triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, and low HDL cholesterol (all risk factors for cardiovascular disease) in children.

A large study published in the journal Circulation followed over 20,000 men for 16 years and found that those men who skipped it were 27% more likely to develop coronary heart disease.

Children who regularly eat the first meal of the day have higher IQs than those who only eat it on occasion.

Regular breakfast consumption is associated with better behavior in school and better academic performance, including better grades and achievement test scores.

Bees Love You with Sweet Honey

Spring is here and so is the time to make your honey! If you have a swarm in your backyard I will tell you how to catch the bees. If you have beekeeping then I assume you already know how to collect and pack your honey from the honeycombs.

Catching a swarm isn’t easy the first time you do it. When you realize the bees are coming out to swarm and not just working hard, you can try to settle them.

When the air becomes thick with bees, get a metal pan and spoon and start banging on it. This helps to settle the swarm into one place.

Once all the bees have settled into a ball, collect them into a hive box. Ideally, the swarm will have settled low enough to get the box under it to the position where you can brush them into the box. Sometimes if they settle on a limb you will have to cut that off and then shake that over the hive box.

Make sure the top is removed. Take a few frames out when you are brushing or shaking the bees. You can replace the lid when the bees start going in. You can tell if the queen has gone in because the other bees will start “bowing” to her as they’re going in.

Hens and Roosters a Wonderful Variety in my Backyard

My Hens and Roosters

My dream flock would consist of one of probably every breed. I like chickens this much.

I am totally egg obsessed and trying to achieve the most colorful egg basket (and colorful chickens) in my suburban backyard. Seasonal availability and hatchery minimums are somewhat a hindrance, so I’m dependent on what my local feed store happens to carry or what I can produce myself using my incubators by mixing hens and roosters of different breeds, thus getting a variety of eggs.

My current laying birds include Easter Egger, Buff Orp, and Blue Wyandotte. I am getting more chicks next week: Black Dominant Copper and an Olive Egger. I wanted to get a white or cream egg layer. The store is getting a new shipment at the end of the month.

Can’t decide between White Leghorn, Sicilian Buttercup, Speckled Sussex, or… Columbian Wyandotte-just because I want a white chicken and they’re so beautiful even though they lay brown eggs.

Good Morning To All Just Telling You It Is Nice To Be Alive

It is nice to be alive, and well. To be able to enjoy the pleasures of life, and learn from the pains that we all go through at some point in our lives.

Grow, run, pause, walk, think, fly, learn, forget, love, write, sing, dance… oh goodness, it is beautiful to have two eyes and be able to see the forest, the beach, the trees, to see nature, the entire world. It’s wonderful to be alive.

In the meantime, I will proceed to drink my cup of coffee and enjoy every single sip of it.
